Heritage, water and public engagement in the face of climate change
FUNPASOS, alongside various European organisations, is taking part in THE SOURCE, an innovative project that addresses water management in the context of climate change from an environmental, civic, cultural and community perspective.
At a time marked by growing climate uncertainty, The Source proposes using cultural heritage as a tool to understand sustainability, encourage public engagement and strengthen the bond between people and their environment.
The project invites us to rethink our relationship with water through the historic fountains found in European towns and cities. These spaces, which are often overlooked or underused, preserve stories, practices and knowledge linked to the collective management of water, as well as shared memories that form part of local identity.
The main aim of the project is to revitalise historic fountains, not as heritage features intended solely for contemplation, but as civic spaces reinterpreted by the public.
This relaunch aims to:
- Rediscovering the value of water as a shared resource
- Bringing environmental education to the public, particularly young people
- Strengthening the link between the community, the local area and the environment
- Impulsar nuevas formas de participación cultural y social
Our ultimate goal is to promote the creation of a European network of ‘Guardians of the Springs’, made up of communities capable of rethinking their relationship with water and taking local, collective action to protect these springs as cultural heritage and as an essential resource for the future.
